Safety Tips for Using ATMs
The automated teller machine (ATM) provides quick, easy access to
your money. By following these safety tips, you can safely use the
ATM whenever you need cash.
-
Memorize your Personal Identification
Number (PIN). Do not write your PIN on your ATM/debit
card or leave it in your wallet. If you must write down your
PIN, do not keep it in your wallet, purse, or on the card itself.
-
Protect your ATM card from damage
by keeping it in a safe place - don't allow it to bend or be
scratched.
- When selecting a PIN, avoid
numbers and letters that can be easily identified or associated
with you. Do not use your initials,
birth date, or telephone number.
- Keep your PIN a secret. Someone
you trust today may not be trustworthy tomorrow. If you suspect
unauthorized use of your card, notify your financial institution
immediately.
- In case you lose your card
- be sure to know the emergency phone numbers for your financial
institution.
To Report a Lost/Stolen VISA card:
call (541) 686-8000 during business hours (800) 682-6075 after
business hours.
- Stand between the ATM and people waiting
to use the machine, and shield the keyboard so others
can't see you enter your PIN.
-
Always take your ATM receipt with you
or shred the receipt before discarding it. Receipts may contain
valuable account information that should be safeguarded.
-
When using an ATM after sunset, consider
going with another person to an ATM in a well-lighted area.
If someone in the area looks suspicious, cancel your transaction,
retrieve your ATM/debit card and immediately leave the area.
Choose another ATM in a safer area.
-
Have your transactions ready before going
to the ATM. Fill out your deposit slip, place your
checks or cash in an envelope and seal it before you arrive
at the ATM location.
-
Have your ATM/debit card ready -- avoid
having to go through your wallet or purse to find your card.
-
Don't fall for "con" games.
If anyone asks you to withdraw money for any reason, leave the
area at once. Notify your financial institution and local law
enforcement officials immediately of any criminal activity.
-
Never give information about your ATM
account to strangers or inquirers on the telephone.
Communicate this information only to your financial institution
in person.
- If you are using an indoor
ATM that requires your card to open the door, avoid letting anyone
come in with you that you do not know.
- If you lose your Visa card
or your ATM card, contact SELCO
immediately.
- Look around and observe your surroundings
- if the machine is poorly lit, or is in a hidden area, use
another ATM.
-
Have your card ready - avoid having
to go through your wallet or purse to find your card.
-
Don't count your cash while standing
at the ATM - put your cash, card, and receipt away immediately.
-
Cancel your transaction and leave
immediately if you see anything suspicious. Confirm, as soon
as possible, with your financial institution that the transaction
was canceled.
-
Always make sure that your transaction
is complete and that your account is not left open. Never forget
to take your card or receipt with you when you leave.
-
Lock the car doors and roll up the
other windows when you use a drive-through ATM.
-
Do not leave your keys or valuables
in the car when using an ATM - and do not leave your car engine
running.
-
Do not leave your receipt behind -
take it with you. Compare your ATM receipts to your monthly
statement. It is the best way to guard against fraud and it
makes record-keeping easier for you.

Tips for Using a Point of Sale Terminal
Paying for goods and services with your ATM card at retail locations
provides you a convenient and easy payment method. Please practice
these important safety tips so your accounts remain protected.
-
Memorize your Personal Identification
Number (PIN). Do not write your PIN on your ATM/debit
card or leave it in your wallet.
-
For your protection, keep your PIN
a secret. Never tell your PIN to anyone, even if
they are helping you with your transaction. If you suspect unauthorized
use of your card, notify your financial institution immediately.
-
Keep your ATM/debit card in a safe
place. Protect it as you would cash or credit cards.
If it is stolen, notify your financial institution immediately.
-
When you use your card at a Point
of Sale (POS) terminal, be sure to shield your PIN entry from
the view of others. Even if another person is helping
you use the terminal, make sure they are not watching when you
enter your PIN.
-
When you receive cash back from a
transaction, safely put it away before leaving the area.
-
Be certain the transaction is complete
and review the receipt before leaving the premises.
Always remember to take the receipt with you and record it in
your register. Then shred your receipt before discarding it,
since it may contain valuable account information.
-
When using a Point of Sale terminal
outdoors, especially after sunset, make certain the area is
well-lighted. Always shield your PIN entry from any
potential onlookers. If someone in the area looks suspicious,
cancel your transaction and immediately leave the area or consider
using a terminal indoors.
-
Have your ATM/debit card ready to
insert before approaching the POS terminal so you
don't have to reach into your wallet or purse while standing
in front of the terminal.
