Tips for a Successful Employment Search

1. Make your first impression a good one. Whenever you are looking for a job, you should always dress your best even if you are only going in to pick up an application. When you are speaking to the person at the front desk, be polite and professional. It is not uncommon for them to put a note on the application that reads: came in very casual attire; was very demanding and rude; dressed in shorts but was really nice; dressed professionally; etc.

2. When calling to check on the status of your application or to ask questions regarding possible employment opportunities, ask if you have called at a good time. Be respectful of the person you are calling. If it is not a good time, ask when it would be appropriate to call back and don't call more than twice in any given day. This could make you appear overly aggressive, behavior that is unbecoming of a SELCO teammate.

3. When completing your application, do so in blue or black ink. Write clearly and fill it out completely. Don't leave any blank spaces. If you make a mistake, don't scratch it out or write over it, put a line through the incorrect word and continue writing. If you have any gaps in employment or anything you wish to give more detail about, please attach a letter of explanation.

4. Come prepared for the interview. Be fully awake and engaged. As a credit union, we have a professional office environment in which we all have the responsibility to present a professional appearance. Women should not wear short skirts, nor clothes that are tight or revealing. Hose should be worn. Men should wear a dress shirt and tie. Inappropriate appearance includes extreme colors for hair and nails, visible tattoos or body piercing (except ears for women), and casual wear. Be early - don't keep the interviewer waiting. When answering the questions, speak clearly and maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Don't be too nervous, typically interviewers don't bite and most are really nice (especially the ones here at SELCO).

5. Following up after interview. See tip # 2, the same rules apply.
