2024 Recipients
This year, 20 students received scholarships of $3,500, and one student received the Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship for $7,500—awarded to a student who has demonstrated excellence in education, leadership, or civic responsibility despite adversity or lack of opportunity. Scholarship awards can be used toward tuition, textbooks, or other educational expenses.
We’ve seen some considerable changes in the preferences and needs of students in recent years, so we made some big changes to our scholarship program as well. In addition to increasing our scholarship amounts and total number of scholarships awarded, we also expanded eligibility to include vocational, nontraditional, and continuing students. The result was a record number of applicants with a broad spectrum of educational goals.

Victor Yanez
Richard Metzler Opportunity Scholarship Recipient
The 2024 Richard Metzler Scholarship recipient is Victor Yanez from Eugene. Victor will pursue an associate degree in nursing from Lane Community College starting in the fall.
This scholarship honors the longtime SELCO Board Member who served 30+ years as a director and supervisor of special education in Springfield Public Schools.
